A fan has created a mod that allows gamers to play through the remake of Resident Evil 2 from a first-person perspective. It took a long time for the Resident Evil series to fully embrace a first-person perspective. The first experiment was Resident Evil Survivor in 2000, a spinoff where players are trapped on a remote island in the wake of another t-Virus outbreak. The game was built using recycled assets from earlier games, and looked cheap and unappealing in first-person. The sequel - Resident Evil Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica - didn’t fare much better, essentially retelling the events of Code: Veronica in the form of a stitched together arcade game.
Resident Evil: Dead Aim was another spinoff that attempted to bridge the gap, mixing third-person exploration with first-person action, for a fun but forgettable experience. Wii games The Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles did a much better job, turning the original games into slick, co-op shooters with updated graphics. It wasn’t until Capcom realized they needed a dramatic reinvention to the main series that they made Resident Evil VII: Biohazard a first-person survival horror game. This worked remarkably well, adding a literal fresh perspective to the franchise.
A recent fan mod added a fixed camera view to the Resident Evil 2 remake, just like the original 1998 game. Now another enterprising modder has added a first-person mode to the game, with PrayDog’s (via Sticky) mod allowing players to experience the game through Leon or Claire’s eyes. It’s not flawless by any means, but it adds another creepy dimension to the gameplay.
These fan mods should add extra replay value for fans who want to mix up their next play session. The remake of Resident Evil 2 has proven extremely successful, selling three million copies within the first week. A recent report suggested Capcom is already working on Resident Evil 8, which will take place on an abandoned island and will continue the storyline from Biohazard. The game is also said to revive the hallucination mechanic that was featured in an early build of Resident Evil 4, where the player can be hit by visions at any moment and stalked by unkillable enemies.
That same report also suggested that title won’t come out until after a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The original game from 1999 found series heroine Jill Valentine trapped in Raccoon City and trying to escape, while being pursued by a powerful tyrant creature dubbed the Nemesis. There are rumors development on the project is already well underway, and given the success of Resident Evil 2, it’s easy to believe Capcom would prioritize Nemesis first.
