A trailer for Resident Evil 2 bonus mode The Ghost Survivors marks the launch of the free DLC. Following the release of Resident Evil 4 in 2005, the franchise became increasingly focused on action and explosive setpieces. Later titles would add co-op gameplay and A.I. partners, and gradually the survival horror roots of the series were forgotten. The release of Resident Evil 6 in 2012 caused Capcom to rethink this direction because while it sold well, it received mostly mixed reviews and feedback from the fanbase.
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard marked a return to the stripped down, horror-focused gameplay of earlier games, but from a first-person perspective. Capcom continued in this vein with their long-anticipated remake of Resident Evil 2. This title reinvents the original game from the ground up, reimagining classic locations and enemies while adding lots of new surprises for veterans. The game quickly became a best-seller and was greeted with almost universally positive reviews. Fans have also been having fun modding the game, adding fixed camera angles like the original and a first-person mode.
Fans were initially concerned classic Resident Evil 2 bonus modes like The 4th Survivor would become paid DLC in the remake, but Capcom kept them part of the main game. Now a trailer has been released for new DLC mode The Ghost Survivors, which presents an alternate, what-if scenario for three ill-fated characters from the main story. This free DLC is available to download from today.
The first story, No Time To Mourn, follows gun shop owner Robert Kendo, who has to escape Raccoon City by fighting through a wave of enemies, including a new kind of poisonous zombie. The second scenario, Runaway, follows the mayor’s daughter Katherine, who faces a new type of zombie that can only be put down with a certain type of ammunition, and the final story is, Forgotten Soldier, following an Umbrella agent named Ghost. In addition to the regular hordes of the undead, poor Ghost also has to deal with zombies wearing body armor.
All of these bonus scenarios seem very similar to HUNK’s The 4th Survivor, but with the added intrigue of providing a happier ending for characters who don’t survive the main game. Prior to the release of Resident Evil 2, there were already reports Capcom was working on a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis too. Thanks to the success of Resident Evil 2, the publisher is reportedly focused on bringing out Nemesis next, with Resident Evil 8 to follow after that. A live-action Resident Evil Netflix show is also in the works, in addition to planned movie reboot from director Johannes Roberts (The Strangers: Prey At Night).
