Here’s Charlie Day brief but hilarious Reno 911! appearance explained. Charlie Day was a relative unknown prior to It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, having appeared in small roles on TV shows like Law & Order. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia focuses on a gang of supposed best friends who run Paddy’s Pub but they’re all despicable lowlifes in their own way. Despite earning a cult fandom the show was almost canceled by FX following the first season due to low ratings.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia went from strength to strength when Danny DeVito was added to the cast during season 2, with its fourteenth season starting in September 2019, making it one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms. Outside of the series, Day has appeared in both Pacific Rim movies and the Horrible Bosses franchise. One of his most recent roles was voicing the character of Benny in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
Charlie Day is also married to actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis in real life, who plays the still-unnamed Waitress in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. The character of Charlie has been stalking the Waitress since the show began, despite her obvious hatred of him, though they did eventually get together in the season 12 finale. This wasn’t the first time they appeared together onscreen however, with the duo playing siblings on a 2004 episode of Reno 911!
Reno 911! is a mockumentary of shows like Cops that follows the day to day lives of a group of incompetent police officers, with co-creator Thomas Lennon (Lethal Weapon) playing the main role of Lt. Jim Dangle. Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis appeared in Reno 911! season 2 episode “Not Without My Mustache,” with Lennon’s Dangle investigating a disturbance at a trailer. Ellis’s character is screaming that her brother, played by Day, is ripping the head off her favorite doll.
The cops encourage the warrings siblings to make peace, but after Day apologizes, they start passionately making out. This leads to Day’s character being arrested - and his credit as “Inbred Twin” starts to make a lot more sense. Day and Ellis’ appearance can’t really be dubbed a cameo since this Reno 911! episode came a year before they broke out with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, but their brief scene is still hilariously gross. It also feels like the inbred McPoyles clan from It’s Always Sunny - which features Westworld’s Jimmi Simpson - was at least partly inspired by this Reno 911! scene.
