Remedy Entertainment surprised fans of their action game Control at the Game Awards this year by releasing their first DLC, Expeditions, available for immediate download. Expeditions was teased a few months ago and assigned a release window of December 2019, but no specific date was ever given. A trailer for Control’s first expansion was shown at The Game Awards 2019, but instead of providing a release date, the trailer ended by proclaiming Expeditions was already available for download.

It’s been a good year for Control, which suffered from a somewhat buggy launch but has since garnered great acclaim. Critics (including Screen Rant’s own) praised Control’s satisfying and engaging combat, as well as the game’s mind-bending story. Control received eight nominations during this year’s rendition of The Game Awards, including Game of the Year, and while the title only won for Best Art Direction, it’s clear Control has received a lot of love.

This love is clearly being shown by the developers as well, as they revealed their plans to furnish Control with a good deal of post-game content. During a trailer originally unveiled at The Game Awards and later posted to YouTube, Remedy showed off Expeditions, which is a free update for all Control players. Expeditions tasks players who have completed the base game with journeying to a new area called the Formation, an extension of the Black Rock Quarry area. In the Formation, players will be presented with a series of timed combat challenges to complete which will reward them with special gear based on the tier of difficulty they select. In addition to the release of Expeditions, Remedy also teased their first paid DLC, The Foundation. Very little information was given in the trailer, but fans did receive a release date: March 26. It’s known from the game’s website that this is the first of two planned DLCs for the game, and it will take the protagonist Jesse on a deep dive into the Oldest House at the behest of the Bureau’s mysterious Board. Further details are scarce, and will likely be revealed closer to the release date of Control’s upcoming DLC.

Control is, by most accounts, an excellent game. Expeditions may not offer any of the immersive and deeply strange story that fans loved to puzzle over in the base Control experience, but it does offer a mysterious new area to explore and more chances to engage in the game’s delightful combat. For a free download, that’s far from insignificant. Expeditions was a very pleasant surprise for Control fans and an excellent way to pass the time while waiting for The Foundation next year.
