Watchmen star Regina King recently expressed interest in a second season of the show, but only if she knew where the story ended. The first season of Watchmen premiered on HBO in fall 2019 and was a hit with both audiences and critics. Although the release of a follow-up season is still in question, many have speculated how the story could resume after the finale’s ambiguous ending.

Regina King stars in Watchmen as Angela Abar, a Tulsa police detective who finds herself wrapped up in a web of deception, masked vigilantes, and racial tension.  The series was commended for tackling contemporary political issues through its creative plot. One of the reasons for its success was the contributions of showrunner Damon Lindelof, who was also the creative behind shows such as Lost and HBO’s The Leftovers. The uncertainty surrounding a return to the world of Watchmen has been whether or not Lindelof would come back for a second season, something he’s shied away from in the past.

Meanwhile, King provided her thoughts on the possible follow-up. According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, King stated, “I can see myself being involved in a season two if it was really smart. I would need to know the beginning and the endgame, unlike how this season was.” She went on to talk about her belief in Damon Lindelof’s talent and how “it’s just really hard to think we could top season one, you know?”

King’s opinions on the possibility of a second season follow reports from earlier this year in which HBO’s programming chief, Casey Bloys, expressed doubt in continuing the series without Lindelof, who gave his blessing for the series to go on without him. There has been some speculation that HBO could make the show an anthology series, but, as of now, no story ideas have been confirmed. They are still searching for something to fill the hole they’ve been left with after Game of Thrones ended its run.

King’s statements about more Watchmen are interesting considering the rumors that it could continue as an anthology series. Perhaps there is still a chance that we get a season two that picks up with what’s next for detective Angela Abar. If that were the case, we might not see what happens for quite a while as King is busy working on her feature directorial debut, adapting Kemp Powers’ stage play One Night in Miami. One thing that can’t be denied is the talent behind the group that produced the first season of Watchmen and how it contributed to the show’s success.

Even if Lindelof doesn’t return and the story is separate from the Angela Abar character, the strength of season one is enough to peak fans’ interest in more Watchmen. HBO knows they hit a home run with the show and are taking careful steps to make sure they don’t ruin the audience’s goodwill. Whatever happens, Watchmen is proof of the company’s dedication to producing quality content.
