The future of Red Dead Redemption 2 seems to be with Red Dead Online and not building the game up with additional single-player content. Rockstar has created one of the better narratives in gaming thus far through Red Dead Redemption 2. Building up a backstory to the original game and somehow having it surpass that initial title isn’t something that many likely believed to be possible. Yet, here we are making claims that it was able to achieve just that.
It rightfully scored a bevy of awards last year, just missing out on 2018’s Game of the Year at The Game Awards in a photo finish with God of War. The story of Arthur Morgan resonated with a lot of people, and it’s clear why fans are clamoring to see more single-player content for Red Dead Redemption 2 released. Unfortunately, it sounds as if the priority for Rockstar Games is to create a more engaging world for players to explore in Red Dead Online.
VG247 recently conducted an interview with Rockstar Games lead online production associate Katier Pica and online producer Tarek Hamad. It was here that Pica admitted that Rockstar is “100% focused on online right now.” The justification for this? According to Pica, the plan is to “bring everything that a player can love about single-player into the online world, and fleshed out.”
Adding on that, Hamad clarified that there’s still much love for the single-player component. “We all love single-player games, and Red Dead Redemption 2’s absolutely massive story and equally massive epilogue are hopefully evidence of that,” he said. Harad continued:
Focusing on Red Dead Online always seemed like a clear direction given the ongoing success of similiar ventures like Grand Theft Auto Online. Still, ignoring successful single-player add-ons like Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare seems like a shame. Some of the best content for Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption were those DLC romps. Still, it’s clear that those types of models just weren’t profitable enough to justify developing for these new games. At least, not compared to the economy and activity that can be fostered through an ever-growing online mode.
“Our ambitions for our online games are just as high, and with Red Dead Online we are continuing to build and expand to match the world we created for Red Dead Redemption 2’s story, not just with the roles but other activities, new random events, characters to meet, new ways to engage with the world and further inhabit your character, as well as trying to improve the overall experience.”
