Here are some of reality TV’s most standout breakups of 2019. Many of them surprised us, however some of them were nothing shocking. Take Kenya Moore and Marc Daly, for example. The Real Housewives of Atlanta villain and her New York-based restauranteur husband got married and became a family with the arrival of their daughter, Brooklyn. Kenya soon noticed a change in her marriage after the arrival of baby. It seems that Marc was more doting on their little one than he was to his wife. He even demanded that they allow their baby to sleep in the bed with them, totally ruining their intimacy. Kenya also objected to Marc’s friendship with her nemesis, NeNe Leakes. Ultimately, they decided to call it quits in 2019 after two years together.

Hannah Brown and Jed Wyatt had another newsworthy split. The Bachelorette beauty chose the wannabe country crooner over fan favorites Peter Weber and Tyler Cameron. Wyatt proposed marriage to her and once the season wrapped, Hannah and Jed started their lives together. That’s when the former Dancing With the Stars contestant learned that Jed had a girlfriend prior to coming to the show, and for most of his stint on the program. She quickly dumped him and tried to rebound with Tyler. Unfortunately, by then, he had already moved on with Gigi Hadid. He and the blonde supermodel began their relationship by following each other on social media. Their fling lasted for most of the summer of 2019, only to fizzle out by late autumn.

Another DWTS participant, Lauren Alaina, split from her Christian comedian boyfriend John Crist. The breakup came amid a sex scandal in which Crist was accused of using his fame to engage in inappropriate relationships with his female fans. Alaina and Crist ended their union just weeks before she took to the ballroom, but she didn’t let the setback or the shame ruin her success on the show. She told the Dancing With the Stars audience, “I am single for the first time as an adult, so I am not trying to hurry love. I will say that I am enjoying it.”

Then there are the couples we thought had finally gotten it right. When Ronnie Ortiz-Magro appeared on E!’s Famously Single, he was a much softer, more vulnerable version of the fist-pumping party guy we met on Jersey Shore. After leaving that show, he fell in love with Jen Harley, and soon, the couple celebrated the arrival of baby Ariana Sky Magro. Magro and Harley had an ill-fated love, though. Domestic violence crept its way into their union, leading to arrests and multiple breakups. As of January 2020, Ortiz-Magro has put their Las Vegas home on the market. Another young couple with a daughter together is Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott. These former lovebirds called it quits in October 2019 and have been successfully co-parenting their daughter Stormi ever since. As a couple, fans rooted for the young billionaire mom and her rapper boyfriend. They made playing house look cool and edgy, but behind the scenes, it was a classic case of “too much, too soon.” He reportedly wanted to see other people, while she was interested in expanding their family. Since their split, Jenner has been casually dating rapper Drake.

Breakups happen, and 2019 was a banner year for them. Life in the spotlight can be tough to navigate, particularly when you’re a reality star. For some, it’s the pressure to live up to their on-camera personas that creates tension. For others, it’s finding that they have less in common than they thought that drives them down a different path than anticipated. In the end, reality stars have to work extra hard to find normalcy in love. Just ask Demi Burnett and Kristian Haggerty, who learned that very lesson after appearing on Bachelor in Paradise. It seems that a difference in lifestyle, as well as distance, drove them apart. Perhaps in 2020, we’ll see these newly single reality stars find happiness in love … or hopefully, happiness together if it’s meant to be.
