Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams admits that a real script for the film was once available on eBay. The Rise of Skywalker could potentially be the most important film in the franchise, being that it wraps up a story that has been in the making since 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope landed in theaters and launched an entire universe of films, TV shows, video games, comics and books. This means that secrecy about the movie’s plot is of utmost importance.
Disney succeeded in keeping one key plot twist secretive, right up until the company revealed it at Star Wars Celebration Chicago. Fans very nearly lost their minds when the first Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer released there, showing the return of Palpatine. However, other plot details remain behind locked doors, and Disney has done everything it can to prevent fans from learning how and why Palpatine is back, as well as keeping them from figuring out the film’s plot. Further trailers have only fueled fan theories, but ultimately, they don’t give a lot away.
Abrams spoke to Good Morning America about all the secrecy, as well as about how important it is to keep fans in the dark. However, he also admits that at some point, one of the actors left a real Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker script under a bed, which was later discovered by a housekeeper. That script ultimately made its way onto eBay, but, fortunately, the production prevented its sale. In the video below, Abrams tells the story, as well as reveals an exclusive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker scene that gives a slight hint about the movie’s structure.
Early versions of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s story would have revolved around Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) being the last Jedi. However, Fisher passed away in 2016. Fortunately, there was previously unseen footage of her from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, meaning that she will appear in The Rise of Skywalker in a lesser capacity. However, Fisher will have top billing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The movie wraps up the Skywalker saga, a journey that has taken Star Wars fans all over the galaxy far, far away for over four decades.
Some fans would have jumped at the chance to get the script for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but it’s good that Disney caught the eBay listing before it was too late. With so much riding on the movie, most fans will undoubtedly want to remain unspoiled about the outcome of one of the most beloved film franchises of all time.
