The Captain America statue in Brooklyn, NY gets into the holiday spirit with some Christmas decoration in the form of a Santa hat. The Captain America statue was originally unveiled by Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 to honor the character’s 75th anniversary, before being transported to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Captain America made his comic book debut in 1941, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, and has since become a household name thanks in part to the hero’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Evans kicked off his time as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and wrapped it up earlier this year with Avengers: Endgame.
The legacy of Captain America lives on not only in the comics but in the MCU as well. In one of the final scenes of Endgame, old man Steve gave the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who will star in the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier alongside Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes. The series will also include fellow Captain America ally Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and introduce John Walker aka U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). But while fans will have to wait until Fall 2020 for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to release, in Steve Rogers’ hometown of Brooklyn, NY, Captain America is now getting into the holiday spirit.
Today, CBR posted photos provided by Andrew Duncan of Marvel’s Captain America statue donning a Santa hat. The statue is currently located at Industry City in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn since being moved from Prospect Park. The statue features a quote from Evans’ Captain America in The First Avenger: “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.” Take a look at the photos below.
While it may just be a simple addition to the Captain America statue, the Santa hat brings some festive spirit to the Marvel Comics icon in his hometown of Brooklyn. Captain America is a beloved figure in New York City. Marvel even had to send a letter asking New York City council member Ben Kallos to stop dressing as Captain America because he was donning the costume and using language from the MCU movies as part of his campaign. (Of course, no Marvel character is immune to being used by politicians, as evidenced by President Donald Trump’s recent Thanos tweet.) Considering Captain America was created by Simon and Kirby as a direct response to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany, it makes sense that the character remains a political figure.
Still, putting a Santa hat on the Steve Rogers statue in Brooklyn is a relatively innocuous addition to the hero’s legacy. Plus, for fans of Captain America who don’t live within an easy travel distance of Industry City, it’s certainly nice to see photos of the statue getting into the holiday spirit. There’s no doubt that if the congenial superhero were real, Captain America would wish fans a happy holidays!
