If a Siri camera is announced and a video camera is included, however, the report’s explanation that it would be used to identify users and set preferences would be an interesting solution to a real problem....

Bloomberg today reports that Apple will be giving most of its global employees an extra bonus as the company plans on repatriating almost $250B of its overseas cash after new US tax laws were passed. According to unnamed sources, Apple made the announcement today to employees that it would issue $2,500 worth of restricted stock units (RSU’s) following the new tax laws. This news comes as Apple also made major announcements about plans to invest $350B in the US economy over the next five years, create 20,000+ jobs, build a new campus, and more....

Variety reports that actor Seth Rogen has been cast to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic from Sony: We learned earlier this month that Christian Bale, who starred in the recent Batman trilogy, will portray Steve Jobs in the Aaron Sorkin directed film. Sorkin later confirmed the report adding that Christian Bale didn’t have to audition for the role in the film. While the Sony-backed film is being written by Aaron Sorkin, Danny Boyle will be directing the upcoming biopic....

Stanford University said that 11,000 iPhone owners signed up for a heart health study using Apple’s newly-announced ResearchKit in the first 24 hours–completely unprecedented numbers. Stanford is one of five academic centers that have developed apps that use the iPhone’s built-in accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS to provide data which assists in medical research. There are, say researchers, both pros & cons to recruiting study participants through ResearchKit … “To get 10,000 people enrolled in a medical study normally, it would take a year and 50 medical centers around the country,” said Alan Yeung, medical director of Stanford Cardiovascular Health, speaking to Bloomberg....

I’ll admit this is a hard report to take at face value. Reuters is reporting that Apple has plans to release a $99 iPhone in a variety of colors later this year. While we’ve heard the plastic/color option on many occasions from analysts, leakers, and reports, it would seem impossible for Apple to reach the $99 price point without subsidizing the phone somehow. According to new data from comScore MobiLens, Apple has taken the top spot as the most popular OEM among U.S. smartphone subscribers. A new report today claimed Apple is gearing up to release a next-generation “iPad 3” with a “full HD display” in March, followed by an “iPad 4” in October. The report came from Asian supply chain watcher DigiTimes who cited Taiwanese industry sources again. Digitimes’ record has been more than a little shaky, especially of late, so approach with caution… According to the report, iPad 3 will sport a QXGA display (1,536 x 2,048 pixel) and improved battery life, but otherwise hardware specifications will remain largely unchanged....

More evidence has emerged of Apple’s plans to launch a podcast subscription service. The Information reports today that Apple is “discussing launching a new subscription service that would charge people to listen to podcasts,” but it’s “unclear when—or whether—Apple will launch the new service.” Update: Bloomberg has published a new report corroborating that Apple is “working on adding a subscription service to its podcasting business in 2021.” This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Apple’s plans to expand its reach in the podcast industry....

Apple is planning to manufacture its upcoming over-ear AirPods Studio headphones in Vietnam, according to a new report from The Information. The report explains that this comes as Apple looks to “diversify manufacturing away from China.” Citing a person briefed on Apple’s plans, the report explains that “some of the headphones” will also be built by contract manufacturers in China: Goertek and Luxshare will assemble AirPods Studio in Vietnam, the report adds....

Both The Verge and ZDNet are independently reporting that Microsoft will finally launch Office for iPad at the end of this month on March 27th, according to sources. According to The Verge, the suite will (unsurprisingly) be very similar to the Office app already on the iPhone App Store. Apple’s new 2017 iPhone models – iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X – made up for about 61% of iPhone sales in the United States, according to a new consumer study from CIRP.
