Apple has reportedly made another payment to Samsung for selling too few iPhones. According to a new report from Display Supply Chain Consultants, Apple made a one-time payment of $950 million to Samsung for purchasing fewer OLED iPhone displays than required. Samsung noted in its Q2 guidance release that the operating profit for Q2 2020 included a “one-time gain related to its display business,” but it did not include the amount....

Apple reportedly has plans to work with publishers to support viewing subscription content in its Apple News app, according to Reuters which cites two anonymous sources. Currently, the Apple News app does not support authenticating subscriber log-ins. That means content can’t be behind a pay wall and can only be monetized by web advertising when readers follow through to the publisher’s website or by using iAds. Apple’s iAd network is noticeably going through a shuffle at the moment with the company recently announcing the end of its App Network where developers advertise their apps....

According to a report from Nikkei today, Apple is encouraging Luxshare, a long-time supply chain partner, to expand its business and encroach on Foxconn’s turf. Right now, Luxshare primarily makes Apple AirPods but is investigating an investment in metal casing manufacturer Catcher (which is part of the iPhone, iPad and Mac supply chains). Nikkei says Apple is keen on Luxshare going ahead with growing its business as it thinks Luxshare could become a viable competitor to the Taiwanese assembly giants Foxconn and Pegatron....

Apple’s June quarter performance included $59.7 billion in revenue with $11.25 billion in profit. One of the strongest areas of growth for the quarter was iPad revenue, with the company highlighting it saw an increase of 31% compared to the same quarter in 2019. Apple doesn’t break out unit numbers but just shared that iPad brought in $6.58 billion in sales in Q2 (fiscal Q3). Canalys is out today with its estimate on how many units Apple shipped and how it compared to the competition....

A new report claims that Apple will be making small volumes of microLED devices this year … The claim is made by Digitimes, a site with a variable track-record. Apple has continued to ramp up its self-driving car testing over the last few months, and now a report from The New York Times says the company has inked a deal with Volkswagen. According to a report from Nikkei Asian Review, Apple could face supply shortages of the iPhone 7 at launch as the publication claims Apple suppliers are facing low yield rates for certain components.
